Maison Margiela, also known as Maison Martin Margiela, a powerhouse French brand known for it’s androgynous designs that redefine the silhouettes of both men and women alike. This week I’ve decided to explore one of my all time favorite brands that have maintained an impeccable dedication to showcasing innovative designs come each fashion season.
Originally launched in 1988 by Jean Paul Gaultier’s former fashion assistant and former womenswear directer for Hermes, Martin Margiela. Martin was known for his passion when it came to redefining societal norms for garments and pushing the boundaries of the fashion industry by utilizing unorthodox designs and fabrics. Not only is the Margiela name known for it’s androgynous designs but their ‘Haute Couture’. The brand has long been holding the official Haute Couture appellation from the Federation Francaise de la Couture since 2012. Nonetheless, while the garments have appeared in multiple editorial magazines, the creative team has maintained a ‘faceless’ presence within the media by opting not to do interviews or photos even after Martin Margiela’s resignation in 2009.
There are many reasons why this brand is on the top of my favorites list. My interest in fashion comes from my love of history and like any other art it requires the same curiosity and studiousness. Since it’s initial launch Maison Margiela has always been pushing the boundaries of fashion norms which deeply relates to my philosophy of developing a fashion taste so unique it could never be imitated to the same level as the original. Furthermore, I admire how many of Margiela’s influences tie back to different moments and cultures in history, such as their Tabi toe boots being influenced by 15th century Japan’s wooden platform sandals. Making true of his quote, “An experience that changes nothing is hardly worth having.” (Martin Margiela) Maison Margiela is a brand that continually engages in bringing a distinctive experience to each of their runaways with exciting and high risk garments.
